Dexter Sol Ansell, who portrays young squire Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, may have inadvertently revealed a significant spoiler regarding the events in A Song of Ice and Fire.

While there are only three Dunk and Egg novellas, their story is woven throughout George R.R. Martin’s other works, giving us some insight into their ultimate fates. This next section contains book spoilers, so proceed with caution if you want to avoid potential spoilers for Dunk and Egg!

In the lore of A Song of Ice and Fire, Egg eventually ascends to the throne and meets his end in a fire at Summerhall. The exact circumstances of this fire remain unclear, but it’s suggested that Egg was attempting to resurrect dragons from extinction. This tragic event claimed the lives of Egg, his son Duncan (named after Dunk), and Dunk himself. However, it appears that this may not be entirely accurate.

“I do know a bit about when Egg’s trying to make dragons in Summerhall, and then there’s a huge fire,” Ansell mentioned in an interview, which has been making the rounds on social media. “But we know from George that Dunk survives, though we don’t know if Egg makes it out.”

His co-star Peter Claffey quickly chimed in: “We don’t know exactly what happened, but let’s just get through season 1 and see.” Check out the moment below.

Not only has Ansell seemingly confirmed that the fire is linked to Egg’s attempts to revive dragons, but he’s also hinted that Dunk survives—a detail that has never been officially confirmed before, although fans have speculated for years that the former hedge knight might have escaped.

Summerhall is mentioned in the show when a soothsayer delivers a cryptic prophecy to Egg, and it may also feature in Daeron’s dream.

The show has a long way to go before it reaches these events, so we might never learn the full truth about what transpired at Summerhall.
