A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Creator Compares Dunk and Egg to Arya and the Hound: “George R.R. Martin Excels at Odd Couple Dynamics”

Ira Parker, the creator of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, believes that the show’s main characters, Dunk and Egg, share a vibe with some beloved duos from the original Game of Thrones series.

“The key difference is that we’re essentially Game of Thrones stripped of all the chaos,” Parker mentioned during a roundtable discussion. “We don’t have the undead threatening humanity, nor the intricate political machinations. We focus on just two characters: Dunk and Egg, our young stable boy. Their relationship is reminiscent of dynamics like the Hound and Arya or Pod and Brienne.”

If you recall seasons 3 and 4 of Game of Thrones, Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane, known as the Hound, journey across Westeros, with the Hound attempting (and failing) to return Arya to her family. Meanwhile, Podrick Payne is assigned to Brienne of Tarth as her squire in season 4, accompanying her on a quest to find the missing Sansa Stark.

Parker adds, “George [R.R. Martin] excels at creating odd couple pairings, which have always been my favorite moments in the original series. Now, we have an entire show centered around this quirky duo, and it’s a blast. I hope it resonates with viewers.”

Set approximately 90 years before Game of Thrones and a century after House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the lowly hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall as he aims to make a name for himself in a tournament. Along the way, he teams up with a mysterious stable boy who goes by the name Egg.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the US, as well as on Sky and NOW in the UK on January 18.
