While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place years before Game of Thrones, the characters have notable connections to the main series that might surprise you, especially the ties between Egg and key figures from the flagship show.
“[A Knight of the Seven Kingdom’s] events are really so close to [Game of Thrones]. Maester Aemon is Egg’s brother. Tywin was his cupbearer and page. He betrothed his son to Olenna Tyrell. He knighted Ser Barristan,” one fan noted on social media.
Maester Aemon appears in Game of Thrones season 1 at the Wall, where he interacts with Jon Snow—unbeknownst to them, Jon is also related to Aemon, as he is actually Aegon Targaryen. Aemon reflects on Egg, his younger brother, during his final moments.
Another fan highlights that Egg is Robert Baratheon’s great-grandfather, which is accurate: his daughter Rhaelle married Ormund Baratheon.
Additionally, Aerys the Mad King is Egg’s grandson in the books, while the show altered this lineage, making the Mad King Egg’s son. Thus, in the books, Egg is Daenerys Targaryen’s great-grandfather, whereas in the show, he is her grandfather. Either way, that’s quite close to the Mother of Dragons.
Egg isn’t the only character linked to the main series. Dunk is mentioned by name and is confirmed to be the ancestor of Brienne of Tarth, as George R.R. Martin revealed back in 2016.
