A new anime adaptation of Attack on Titan could be on the horizon.

Attack on Titan may have wrapped up its story in 2023, but it looks like more turmoil could be on the way. WIT Studio has teased an Attack on Titan-related announcement set for August 20. Their mysterious message hints at a “special dinner” during “that period.” This was shared alongside a promotional image featuring Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Hange, and Erwin, credited to Isayama Hajime, the manga’s creator, and the Attack on Titan The Final Season Production Committee, which oversaw the anime’s extensive 35-episode “final season” (actually split into two seasons and two specials).

This announcement raises eyebrows for a couple of reasons. For starters, the anime has already completed its adaptation of Isayama’s manga with the aptly named Final Season. The series even received a compilation film, The Last Attack, which bundled the last two specials with an additional scene.

Another surprising aspect is that this news comes from WIT Studio, which hasn’t been the main animation studio for the series since 2019. While they produced the first 59 episodes, MAPPA took over for the Final Season, which aired from 2020 to 2023. Since then, WIT has been busy with projects like Spy x Family and Ranking of Kings.

However, this reveal aligns with comments made by Attack on Titan producer Tetsuya Kinoshita last year. During the premiere of Attack on Titan – The Official Concert – Beyond the Walls World Tour, he mentioned plans to continue creating films like Last Attack, along with concerts and various game collaborations. The video game Attack on Titan 3 is set to release on December 10, but there are currently no officially announced anime projects in the pipeline.

As for the cryptic message, the “special dinner” could allude to the series’ themes of cannibalism. The phrase “that period” leaves us guessing about when this new project might take place. If the teaser image is any indication, it could hint at a prequel set before the Final Season, when the six characters depicted were still alive. We’ll have to wait until next Thursday for more details.

The final battle is about to begin again.
