A new Borderlands title has launched and is available for free!

After the recent downloadable content drop for Borderlands 4 in March, the gaming community was caught off guard by a new game announcement. Surprisingly, this latest entry in the Borderlands franchise is being developed by Zynga, not Gearbox Software. Yes, you read that right—Borderlands is going mobile. The good news? Borderlands Mobile stays true to the cel-shaded aesthetic fans love.

Expect all the classic elements of a Borderlands game, including vaults, skags, and the ever-quirky Claptrap. Importantly, Borderlands Mobile retains the co-op gameplay that allows you to team up with friends to hunt for increasingly powerful weapons. The controls have been tailored for mobile touchscreens, but if you prefer a more traditional setup, you can use accessories like the Backbone controller for button-based aiming. Currently, there’s only one playable character, but the plan is to introduce a total of four Vault Hunters over time.

This version features an original campaign, with missions designed to be short and sweet, perfect for mobile play. Early gameplay footage suggests that it lacks the expansive open world found in Borderlands 4. Some features, including the pricing for the battle pass, are not yet available. However, players have noted that what is currently accessible in Borderlands Mobile is surprisingly substantial, especially considering the game’s low-key launch.

“I’m genuinely shocked,” one player commented in a Reddit thread filled with astonished fans. “Just loaded in, it’s actually Borderlands. Not some gimmick.”

For now, the game seems to be exclusive to Apple devices in the U.S., with a global rollout expected in the future. Some players have reported difficulty locating Borderlands Mobile in the App Store, but it’s worth checking out directly.
