A new Scooby-Doo anime is on the way!
Scooby-Doo has taken on many forms over the years—from a playful pup to a CG creation, and even as a live-action adult mingling with celebrities. We’ve also seen him animated by the Japanese studio Mook Animation in various films. Now, he’s set to receive an anime transformation like never before in the upcoming series, Scooby-Doo! Gokko.
This new series was recently unveiled at a special event in Brazil, coinciding with the launch of a Scooby-Doo x Miss Frandy makeup line, and is slated for release in 2027. The anime will center on Scooby and Shaggy, following the trend set by Tom & Jerry Gokko, a series of animated shorts featuring a chibi style. The term “Gokko” translates to “pretend” or “play,” often used when characters engage in make-believe, and Warner Bros. has adopted it to label their classic animations with a chibi anime flair.
Scooby-Doo has dabbled in anime influences before—no, not the infamous Ultra Instinct Shaggy. In 2024, an anime project was announced featuring Shaggy and Scooby traveling to Japan to face off against Yokai in a series titled Go-Go Mystery Machine. This show promised a fresh look for the duo and introduced a new character, Scooby’s uncle Daisuke-Doo. However, since the initial announcement at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, there has been little news, aside from some promotional art and a plot synopsis from Warner Bros. Discovery: “While visiting Japan on the ultimate foodie adventure, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo unwittingly unleash hundreds of mischievous mythical monsters that are now causing trouble all over the country. Scooby turns to his uncle, Daisuke-Doo, and magical friend Etsuko and gadget wiz Toshiro to help solve the mystery and catch the monsters.”
Despite the silence on that front, it seems Warner Bros. is still keen on giving Scooby an anime adventure, which aligns with their trend of localizing Eastern entertainment. Let’s not forget their previous projects like the Suicide Squad anime and Ninja Batman films.
