A popular romantasy series is being transformed into a board game.

Romantasy has taken the literary world by storm, captivating readers with its enchanting dragons, fae, and irresistibly charming magical characters, transforming into a massive publishing phenomenon.

Now, it seems that conquering the literary scene isn’t enough. One of the genre’s standout series is making its way to your board game collection.

This fall, Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses is set to launch its own original strategy game: A Court of Thorns and Roses: Fate and Favor. Scheduled for release this October at a price of $24.99, there will also be a Target-exclusive edition and a variant available through select booksellers.

Instead of merely slapping ACOTAR artwork onto an existing game, Fate and Favor is designed around the intricate politics of Prythian. Players will assume the roles of High Lords or High Ladies from one of the seven Courts—Night, Day, Dawn, Winter, Summer, Spring, or Autumn—and vie for influence.

While the complete rules are still under wraps, the core concept should resonate with fans of the book series, who have witnessed the ebb and flow of alliances. Players will form their own alliances, navigate changing loyalties, and encounter familiar characters (with preview images featuring Elain, Lucien, and Cresseida), locations, and events. Character abilities, Court powers, event cards, and “shifting fate tokens” will all play a role in the gameplay.

It appears to lean more towards a social strategy game rather than an extensive fantasy war game.

Fate and Favor isn’t Goliath’s first foray into adapting a beloved romantasy series for the tabletop. The company also produces Fourth Wing: Rise of the Wingleader, inspired by Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series, where players compete for prestige at Basgiath War College.

The board game is launching at a particularly exciting time for A Court of Thorns and Roses. After a five-year wait since A Court of Silver Flames, Maas is releasing two new books in rapid succession: book 6 is set to drop on Oct. 27, followed by book 7 on Jan. 12, 2027.

While the long-anticipated ACOTAR TV series at Hulu has officially been scrapped, this may not be the end of Prythian’s journey to the screen. Earlier this year, Maas announced that she has regained the adaptation rights to her work, expressing a desire for more creative control over any future projects. For now, her primary focus remains on the books.
