A promising Avatar: The Last Airbender game could be on the horizon this summer.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game unveiled a new trailer during the Evo Awards on Saturday, confirming its release date of July 2. It looks like a blast, and there’s a strong possibility that Avatar Legends will quickly rise to the top as the best game inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra, especially considering the franchise’s rocky history with video game adaptations.
The release date trailer reveals that Avatar Legends is a 2D fighting game packed with all the classic elements fans expect from the genre. Players can dive into single-player story, arcade, and training modes to sharpen their skills before jumping into ranked or casual online matches against others. The online experience will feature rollback netcode for reduced latency and crossplay support, ensuring a unified community.
While five additional fighters are set to join the roster post-launch, the game will debut with twelve characters:
Historically, licensed games based on Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have been budget titles that often fell short of capturing the magic of the beloved animated series. Even PlatinumGames struggled to deliver a standout action game based on The Legend of Korra back in 2014. Here’s hoping Avatar Legends can turn that trend around.
We’re currently enjoying a golden age for licensed games, particularly in the fighting genre. Invincible VS is set to release next month, with its developer showcasing fighters Conquest, Universa, and Immortal at the Evo Awards. Following that, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will bring us the first new Marvel Comics fighting game in nearly a decade this August. While Avatar Legends may not boast as large a launch roster as those tag-team fighters, it aims to hold its own among the competition when it arrives.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game launches on July 2 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
