A remake of Baldur’s Gate is reportedly in the works.

The next installment in the Baldur’s Gate series is set to take a different direction, stepping away from Larian Studios’ acclaimed RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, and instead revisiting the classics. An anonymous source has revealed that Wizards of the Coast, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons, is working on a remake of the iconic Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadow of Amn, originally crafted by BioWare.

The report indicates that Kevin Martens, a former BioWare developer and co-lead designer of Baldur’s Gate 2, is involved in this project, which may also encompass a remake of the original Baldur’s Gate. The specifics of what this entails remain uncertain. Both Baldur’s Gate and its sequel have previously received a well-received “enhanced” edition from Beamdog, which improved interfaces, fixed bugs, and introduced new companions and quests.

A full remake could bring new graphics, potentially in either 3D or a modernized 2D style. The first two games, along with the expansion Throne of Bhaal, were built using BioWare’s Infinity Engine, featuring an isometric view that created a 3D feel with pre-rendered 2D backgrounds and sprite-based characters. As a devoted fan of these titles, it’s hard to envision how they would translate to contemporary graphics.

Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 are hailed as some of the greatest computer RPGs ever made and stand out as successful adaptations of Dungeons & Dragons. Long before Larian’s involvement, BioWare crafted an unforgettable saga filled with rich environments, relatable characters, and impactful choices that resonate with players even today. While the Enhanced Editions have kept the games alive, the dated graphics can be a hurdle for new, younger audiences.

Yet, graphics aren’t the only challenge a remake might face. The original games utilized a modified version of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules, which have been outdated for 26 years. The current editions of D&D have streamlined the rules significantly, which could make it difficult for younger players to grasp the intricate systems of Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2, especially with their pausable real-time gameplay. This experience contrasts sharply with Baldur’s Gate 3.

If these rumors hold true, the success of the remakes will hinge on Wizards of the Coast’s vision. Striking the right balance between preserving the essence of the originals and modernizing them will be crucial. For fans, the hope is that the developers will approach this task with care and respect.
