A remastered version of the ultimate Shrek game has surfaced online.

With Shrek 5 on the horizon, DreamWorks’ beloved ogre is making a return to the gaming scene. Earlier this year, Shrek and his crew joined the roster of Brawlhalla, and now a remaster of the classic Shrek 2 tie-in game has surfaced, thanks to an early listing on the Xbox Store.

Hints about a Shrek 2 Remastered began circulating when Steam Achievements for the game leaked in September, coinciding with the reveal of achievements for Kingdom Hearts 4. Then, on October 16, an Xbox.com store page for Shrek 2 Remastered was spotted, unveiling details about the game and even leaking its announcement trailer.

Leaks from the Xbox store are more common than you might think. This year alone, early reveals for the console ports of Mewgenics and Rayman Origins Enhanced Edition also emerged in this way. As someone who spent countless hours playing Shrek 2: The Game, this might just be the most thrilling Xbox Store leak of the year.

Originally developed by Luxoflux and released by Activision in 2004, Shrek 2 loosely adapts the film’s storyline into an isometric action-adventure format. While it may not be the most groundbreaking licensed game ever, it certainly stood out for its polish and fun factor compared to many other licensed titles of its time, including other Shrek games. I have fond memories of this tie-in, and I’m excited for a new generation to experience it.

According to the now-removed store page, Apsyr is handling the remaster. This studio has a mixed reputation, having released several flawed retro Star Wars game remasters, but they’ve seen more success with recent re-releases of The Lord of the Rings games. Shrek 2 Remastered is set to provide the original Xbox, PS2, and GameCube game with a visual upgrade, along with the addition of a photo mode and cheat mode.

Unfortunately, the leak didn’t specify a release window for Shrek 2 Remastered, and we’re still in the dark about when it will be officially announced. However, it’s likely that the remaster will launch before Shrek 5 hits theaters on June 30, 2027.
