A Star Wars Legend Joins the Cast of a New Deep Space Nine Thriller

Next to George Lucas, Timothy Zahn stands out as a pivotal figure in the Star Wars universe. His Thrawn trilogy, released in the 1990s, played a crucial role in reigniting interest in the franchise and shaping its expanded universe. Much of Zahn’s work has even been integrated into the current Star Wars canon, making his recent shift to Star Trek quite unexpected.

Ahead of New York Comic Con, it was announced that Zahn will be penning Star Trek: Roc’s Egg. Ángel Hernández, known for his contributions to various Star Trek comics, will illustrate the graphic novel. The official synopsis teases an intriguing plot:

Something is amiss on Deep Space 9. When a mysterious artifact called a Roc’s Egg arrives at the station—only to be seemingly destroyed during transit—a Federation JAG investigation is launched to uncover the truth. As the team delves deeper, the mystery intensifies: a secret auction, a station filled with affluent collectors and dangerous criminals, a priceless artifact that may not be what it appears, and a looming murder. From the acclaimed Timothy Zahn and artist Ángel Hernández comes Star Trek: Roc’s Egg, a captivating new mystery set aboard Deep Space 9, where everyone has secrets—and the truth could be more valuable than the treasure itself.

Regarding Zahn’s transition to Star Trek, a representative expressed excitement about his potential contributions to this corner of the franchise, suggesting that fans will enjoy unraveling the mystery alongside him. The graphic novel is slated for release in October 2027.

Currently, Star Trek fans are facing a dry spell. With two shows—Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy—airing but set to conclude next year, it will mark the first time since 2017 without a Star Trek series on television. Although a film reboot is in the works, progress appears to be sluggish, leaving Trekkies with little new content. Zahn’s involvement could be just what the franchise needs to reignite interest.

When Zahn released the Thrawn trilogy, Star Wars was in a similar predicament, having lost popularity after the original films. His novels not only revived interest but also laid the groundwork for the prequel films. Now, as Star Trek faces a potential lull, bringing in talent like Zahn to craft new narratives is a promising way to remind fans that the universe still has much to offer.

This new venture arrives just in time to celebrate Trek’s 60th anniversary.
