A surprise sequel is on the way for the most debated Christmas movie of all time.
You know what they say: everyone loves a Murder Santa. Well, almost everyone. A full 42 years after the original film sent shockwaves through the horror community and ignited protests, Silent Night, Deadly Night is getting a sequel — this time, in novel form. Silent Night, Deadlier Night, penned by author Armando Muñoz, is set to drop on November 10 from Titan Books. Muñoz has a solid track record with horror adaptations, having worked on titles like Silent Night, Deadly Night, My Bloody Valentine, and Happy Birthday to Me, along with original works such as Hoarder, Turkey Day, and Turkey Kitchen.
The original Silent Night, Deadly Night hit theaters in 1984 and quickly became a lightning rod for controversy, especially after a trailer featuring a sinister Santa aired during a Packers game, reportedly scaring kids. This led to the formation of a group called Citizens Against Movie Madness. While the film faced its share of backlash, it ultimately triumphed, spawning a franchise that includes four sequels, a 2012 remake, and a reboot set for 2025.
As a horror cult classic, the film follows young Billy Chapman and his brother, whose lives are shattered when their parents are murdered by a man in a Santa suit. Traumatized, Billy’s journey takes a dark turn as he transforms into a themed serial killer, culminating in a Christmas killing spree.
Set 20 years after the original film, the new book centers on Ricky Chapman, Billy’s younger brother. Despite his desire for a quiet life, Ricky’s troubled past resurfaces when Sister Margaret, a nun from the orphanage where he and Billy grew up, comes back into the picture after spending years in an asylum. Complicating matters is a new Killer Santa who seems to know far too much about Ricky and his brother. The tension escalates when a blizzard knocks out the power, leaving Ricky to navigate the chaos on this Silent Night, Deadlier Night.
