A Witcher 3 Developer Looks Back on the Iconic Bloody Baron Quest: “I Made Many Mistakes”

The Witcher 3 was a groundbreaking RPG upon its release in 2015, setting new standards for narrative depth in gaming. One of its standout moments is the Bloody Baron quest, which has garnered acclaim for its storytelling. However, even its creator believes he would approach it differently if he were to design it today.

“In the Bloody Baron quest, I made so many mistakes,” Paweł Sasko shared during a discussion at Gamescom. “The way it was structured, it takes almost four hours to complete. While the narrative is strong, I could have conveyed that story more effectively with better pacing.”

For those who haven’t experienced The Witcher 3 yet, the Bloody Baron questline marks a pivotal point in the game’s first act. Geralt is on a mission to find his surrogate daughter Ciri, but the Bloody Baron withholds information until Geralt helps him locate his own missing wife and daughter.

As is typical in The Witcher universe, things are not straightforward. The quest reveals the Baron’s dark past as an alcoholic shaped by years of war, including the abuse of his wife, which led to a tragic miscarriage during one of his drunken episodes. At a critical moment, Geralt must confront the consequences of the Baron’s actions, embodied in the form of a Botchling, as the Baron confesses his wrongdoings.

It’s a harrowing emotional journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. “We’ve learned to structure gameplay in expansions for both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk into focused segments of about 40 minutes of intense, thematic gameplay and storytelling,” Sasko explained. “After that, we allow players a breather to explore the world again.”

He added, “There are exceptions to this rule—like in finales or specific quests such as Somewhat Damaged in Phantom Liberty, where players are trapped in a bunker with a monster. In those scenarios, we intentionally keep the tension high, so players feel the weight of the situation.”

While Sasko and the team at CD Projekt Red have honed their storytelling and quest design skills over the past 11 years, The Witcher 3 remains a landmark title in both areas. Fans will be eager to see if the upcoming DLC, Songs of the Past, can deliver moments that are even half as impactful.
