Activision Reveals Major Shift for Call of Duty: No More Annual Modern Warfare or Black Ops Releases to Enhance Unique Gameplay Experience

Activision has announced a significant shift in the Call of Duty franchise, stating that there will no longer be consecutive releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops titles. This change comes in response to the mixed feedback from players and critics regarding the latest installment, Black Ops 7.

In a recent blog post from the Call of Duty team, Activision acknowledged the challenges faced by Black Ops 7, which aimed to be a spiritual successor to Black Ops 2. “The studios have poured their passion into making a great game that all of us are very proud of,” they stated. “But it’s one thing for us to say it; more importantly, it’s up to you to try it and judge for yourselves.”

Players have certainly weighed in, as Black Ops 7 currently holds “mostly negative” reviews on Steam, with many criticizing its story, multiplayer modes, and overall performance. The game has also received one of the lowest Metascores in the series at 67, along with a dismal user score of 1.6, indicating widespread dissatisfaction.

To address these issues, Activision has laid out a three-part plan to improve the game’s reception. First, they will offer a free trial and a double XP weekend starting “next week,” allowing players to experience the game and form their own opinions.

The second part of their strategy involves “unprecedented seasonal support,” although specific details are still forthcoming. “Season 01 is the largest live season ever, and we’re just getting started,” Activision noted. “We won’t rest until Black Ops 7 earns its place as one of the best Black Ops games we’ve ever made.”

Lastly, Activision is overhauling its release strategy for Call of Duty, committing to no longer release Black Ops and Modern Warfare games back-to-back. “The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year,” they explained. “We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental.”

While more details will be shared in due time, Activision reassured fans that “the future of Call of Duty is very strong, and we believe our best days are ahead of us given the depth and talent of our development teams.”
