Adorable Highlights from the 2026 Wholesome Direct Showcase
Every year at Summer Game Fest, the Wholesome Direct offers a refreshing break from the high-octane showcases, presenting a more laid-back atmosphere. This year’s event featured over 50 games, all with a cozy and wholesome vibe. I’ve highlighted some of the most exciting reveals and announcements, but you can catch the full presentation yourself. If you’re eager to try out some of the games, several are available now, and many have demos on Steam.
Hidden Folks 2
The beloved seek-and-find game Hidden Folks, which debuted in 2017, is getting a sequel. While details are still under wraps, Hidden Folks 2 promises “hand-drawn, interactive, miniature landscapes in various new themes, along with more silly jokes, more mouth sounds, and various quality of life improvements.” It’s set to launch in 2027 on both mobile and PC.
In the Drift
This narrative adventure comes from a new studio led by Sable co-creator Daniel Fineberg. The story follows Luna, a young woman starting her new job as a telecoms engineer in space. During the day, she tackles work challenges, and in the evenings, she relaxes with her crew aboard the ship. In The Drift explores themes of kindness and finding hope in a world that feels increasingly disconnected.
Moomin: Midsummer Madness
The enchanting world of the Moomins, known for its winter-themed games, is now getting a summer twist. Midsummer Madness features a painterly visual style and a whimsical premise centered around “a floating abandoned theatre filled with puzzles and mysteries.” It’s set to launch in 2026 on both PC and the Switch.
Patience Is a Virtue
Described as “a mystery puzzle game about communicating with people you don’t understand,” Patience Is a Virtue places you in the shoes of a recent college grad returning to his childhood home, only to find everything has changed. The situation escalates when he encounters a sentient cassette player. A demo is available on Steam for those interested.
Waterful
Offering a cozy take on city-building, Waterful has you digging riverbeds to guide water, rejuvenate desert valleys, and attract wildlife. With procedurally generated locations, it promises plenty of replayability for those looking to unwind.
Otterly Lost
The charming title isn’t the only reason to be excited about this game. Otterly Lost is an open-world adventure where you play as a lost otter, meeting quirky animal friends, solving gentle puzzles, and enjoying light platforming. It evokes Ecco the Dolphin vibes, but in a 3D setting, and is set to launch on Steam in September.
The Wandering Village: The Last Leviathan
The Wandering Village, a unique city-building game where your city resides on the back of a giant, walking creature, is expanding with The Last Leviathan. This update introduces a new aquatic creature to build upon, along with new mechanics related to the creature’s body temperature and mood, and an arctic ocean to explore.
