After 12 years, the creators of Spider-Verse are set to bring 24 Jump Street to life.

It’s been 12 years since the release of 22 Jump Street, the follow-up to the R-rated action-comedy twist on the late-’80s TV series 21 Jump Street. Now, it looks like creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube, are gearing up to bring the hilarious post-credits scene of 22 Jump Street to life.

Reports indicate that 24 Jump Street is officially in development, with Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote and co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, set to take the helm. Rothman collaborated with Hill and Meghan Malloy on the script for this third installment. Lord and Miller, who directed the first two films, will be producing.

Recently, producer Neil H. Moritz shared a snapshot of the 24 Jump Street script on social media, humorously noting the absence of a 23 Jump Street with the tagline: “It took so long we had to skip one.”

The Jump Street series has always had a playful approach to its numbering. The original title refers to both the undercover program and the address of their headquarters, 21 Jump Street. The sequel explained that the program moved across the street, prompting the name change. At the end of 22 Jump Street, the filmmakers teased an extensive list of sequels—23 in total—along with potential video game and animated spin-offs.

Based on the end-credits joke from 22 Jump Street, we might have a hint about the direction of the third film: Russia. The rumored lineup of upcoming Jump Street films includes:

(*It’s uncertain if there’s actually a 39 Jump Street movie; the film only features a gag about a kids’ game based on the hypothetical film.)

In the original 2012 film, Tatum and Hill portray underperforming cops Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt, who go undercover to dismantle a high school drug operation. They dive into high school life, with the once-popular Jenko becoming an outcast, while Schmidt finds acceptance among the cool kids. Schmidt develops an inappropriate crush on a high school girl played by Brie Larson, which distracts him from taking down drug dealer Eric (Dave Franco). Ice Cube plays their tough-as-nails captain, Dickson, who oversees the 21 Jump Street program. The 2014 sequel, 22 Jump Street, sees Jenko and Schmidt back undercover, this time in college.

It’s unlikely that Tatum and Hill’s characters will return to high school or college life, given that both actors are now in their 40s. Unless they’re playing teachers, sending 24 Jump Street back to school could get a bit strange. But then again, that quirky vibe is exactly what this franchise is known for.

A decade later, I’m still all in on this concept.
