Mewgenics, the quirky new tactical roguelike from the creator of The Binding of Isaac, has launched to rave reviews from both players and critics, and it’s already on track to become a commercial hit.
Developed by Edmund McMillen and his long-time collaborator Tyler Glaiel, who also brought us The End is Nigh, Mewgenics marks a significant shift for the duo. While it retains the roguelike essence, players are now tasked with assembling a powerful army of mutant cats to engage in strategic turn-based battles.
Glaiel recently shared on Bluesky that the team recouped their development costs in just three hours, expressing gratitude for the support.
This cat-centric adventure is proving to be a success across the board. As of now, it’s climbing the Steam charts with nearly 800 reviews, 96% of which are positive.
Critics are also singing its praises, with one reviewer awarding it 4.5 out of 5 stars, describing it as “a dense, detailed, and hugely varied strategy roguelike” with “an imaginative and rewarding gameplay loop,” only slightly hindered by some harsh RNG.
Let’s not forget, Mewgenics was initially announced back in 2012, shelved in 2016, and rebooted in 2018. This means it has been in active development for at least eight years, making that three-hour recovery time all the more remarkable. The future looks bright for Mewgenics, and with its feline focus, it’s no surprise it’s capturing attention.
After 20 hours of training necromancer cats and building an army of sentient rocks, I can confidently say Mewgenics is one of the best roguelikes I’ve ever experienced.
