After a decade in development, a free-to-play Steam MMO launches and is surprisingly thriving.

Releasing a live service game in 2026 might seem risky, but launching a massively multiplayer game as an indie developer right now is nothing short of courageous. Big-name publishers with deep pockets often roll out multiplayer titles that struggle to find an audience. Most of these games don’t take a decade to develop, and if they do, they certainly aren’t offered for free on platforms like Steam. Yet, the creators of Soul’s Remnant are undeterred by these challenges.

Soul’s Remnant is a 2D platformer MMORPG that prioritizes exploration and social interaction. With its charming pixel art style and a classless skill system, the game features randomized dungeons and bosses that players can tackle alongside friends. Social gameplay is at the forefront, offering mechanics such as guilds, party-specific housing, and player-run shops. Many players have compared it to MapleStory, but without the frustrating pay-to-win elements.

“It always bugged me how much people tried to discourage others from making an MMO as just one person,” developer Chaosmoon shared on Reddit. “Yes, it’s hard—very hard. But it’s not impossible, especially if you have the passion and determination to get this far.”

While the game shines in multiplayer, solo players will find plenty to enjoy as well. With an impressive soundtrack featuring over 40 original tracks, the game also launched with 10 NPC villagers, each with their own unique personalities to befriend. Reviews highlight a narrative style reminiscent of FromSoftware games, where players must piece together a cryptic story from scattered clues.

For eight years, Soul’s Remnant was primarily a solo endeavor for Chaosmoon, who was later joined by a partner. The game remains a passion project, supported by a tight-knit community. “Every bug I’ve encountered has been fixed within the same day,” noted one player on Steam.

Chaosmoon acknowledges that they could have opted for a simpler or quicker project, but the dream of creating an MMO has been a lifelong ambition. As of August 13, that dream has finally materialized. Just a day after its release, Soul’s Remnant saw nearly 3,000 concurrent players on Steam. While it may not rival titans like World of Warcraft, the small development team doesn’t need to.

Although the game is free to play, the developers maintain a modest Patreon and offer a cosmetics shop. However, there are no gameplay advantages or conveniences available for purchase, such as auto loot. The base game already includes hundreds of equipment options, ensuring the shop isn’t designed to exploit players. The developer has no plans to alter the monetization model, expressing confidence in their ability to manage server costs and scalability. If server stability becomes a concern, it will likely be due to the game’s success.

Despite being in Early Access, the lengthy development process has equipped the game with a wealth of content typical of an MMO. The team plans to collaborate closely with the community for future updates, and with a “very positive” rating on Steam, the game’s future looks bright.

“One of the best MMORPGs I have played in a long time,” states the top-voted review on Steam.

Another player, who has already logged 300 hours in Soul’s Remnant, praises the soundtrack as “top tier” and describes the skill system as a “dopamine driver.” Most notably, they were impressed by the developers’ “rare” dedication.

“A lot of people have been chomping at the bit for a good retro MMO experience, and this is the kind of game they’ve been waiting for,” another review adds.
