After three years of curating an epic treasure collection in an MMO, a player decided to go all out in a single session, humorously noting, “When I check ‘Time Played,’ the game just tells me to touch grass.”
Nearly three years ago, Old School RuneScape player, Twitch streamer, and YouTube content creator Pen Sir embarked on a quest to gather unopened reward caskets from clue scrolls, which are scavenger hunt-style minigames. With over 10,000 caskets collected, he’s finally ready to unleash them, turning years of effort into a single exhilarating moment.
When Pen Sir announced he would be opening these caskets on January 3, the OSRS Reddit community buzzed with excitement. The image of his massive stash of caskets is nothing short of jaw-dropping, akin to watching someone meticulously set up a line of dominoes, poised to topple them all.
In a chat before the big reveal, Pen Sir humorously noted that when he checks his “Time Played,” the game simply tells him to “touch grass…”
His journey began years ago with the hope of winning a clan event that ultimately never materialized, yet the caskets kept piling up. He admits to accidentally opening just one during this entire time, although he did lose a staggering 80 to a PvP mishap. “Don’t afk in the Wilderness,” he cautions, a nod to the dangers of Old School RuneScape’s PvP zones.
“It’s been years since I’ve opened any clues, and I’m really excited for it,” he shares. “The past couple of nights, I’ve only gotten about 1-2 hours of sleep because I can’t wait to finally crack them open.”
Completing clue scrolls, especially on an Iron Man account like Pen Sir’s, which can’t trade with other players, requires significant time and effort to gather rare items. However, it’s a solid way to earn Collection Log points, a true measure of completion in an MMO that isn’t meant to be beaten in the traditional sense. He estimates he might add around 500 new items to his log, including a coveted piece of 3rd Age armor.
“I know most people aren’t fans of this item, but I would love to get 3rd Age vambraces,” he admits. “Wearing such a rare item without others realizing it feels like the ultimate flex to me. Besides that, I’m hoping for some cool dusk mystic pieces, dragonstone armor, and the evil chicken outfit!”
The anticipation of finally opening these caskets feels “surreal,” he reflects. “The temptation has been intense. Oddly enough, running simulations helped me manage it,” he explains. “I got a bit obsessive, creating new spreadsheets each week to track my expected items. There was even a simulator I used to compare my numbers.”
This monumental achievement is a testament to the long-term grind that defines OSRS. As Pen Sir puts it, “I guess everything in OSRS is a long-term grind.” This is just how he chose to engage with the game, showcasing the beauty of player-driven experiences. What started as passive collection through typical achievement and loot grinding has culminated in a historic moment. Just another day in the vibrant world of OSRS.
