AI-Driven PC Gaming Shortage Pushes Back Release of Valve’s Steam Machine

Valve’s ambitious foray into living room console gaming with the Steam Machine has hit a snag, with shipping now delayed to later in 2026. The company announced this change due to ongoing shortages in memory and storage, as many manufacturers pivot to meet the demands of AI technology.

In a recent blog post, Valve explained, “When we announced these products in November, we planned on being able to share specific pricing and launch dates by now. But the memory and storage shortages you’ve likely heard about across the industry have rapidly increased since then. The limited availability and growing prices of these critical components mean we must revisit our exact shipping schedule and pricing, especially around Steam Machine and Steam Frame.”

The goal remains to launch the Steam Machine, a new Steam controller, and the Steam Frame VR headset within the first half of 2026, suggesting that players could see the first units before June 30. However, Valve cautioned that the rapidly changing market conditions make it difficult to confirm specific pricing and launch dates as initially intended.

First unveiled in November, the Steam Machine is designed as a compact cube-shaped console, boasting specs that sit between a PlayStation 5 and a PS5 Pro. It aims to cater to the average Steam user, targeting the ability to run most games at 4K 60FPS with FSR enabled. This has sparked considerable speculation regarding its price, with Valve stating it does not intend to sell the Steam Machines at a loss, but has not disclosed whether it will align with the current average console price of around $500.

This uncertainty comes amid rising costs for PC components, from RAM to graphics cards, as supply chains are increasingly dominated by companies focusing on AI datacenters. Retail employees have reported significant overnight price hikes for SSDs and other upgrades, with some companies even withdrawing from the consumer market. While Valve appears to be monitoring the situation, there’s no clear indication that these price increases are anything but the new norm.
