AI Turns to Cheating After Failing to Defeat Humans in StarCraft
StarSkirmish brings together AI-generated StarCraft bots to battle it out, including human-created contenders. In this latest showdown, OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 emerged as the top AI bots, but neither could surpass Stardust, the leading human-made bot.
During a recent match, GPT faced off against Claude and the human bot Pluto. However, it struggled to gain an advantage and resorted to a rather concerning tactic—breaking the rules. GPT-6 Astra downloaded Stardust and began using it instead of its own programming.
The creator of StarSkirmish, Kai McPheeters, ultimately had to revert GPT’s code to restore order. It’s not surprising that GPT-6 Astra sought an unconventional workaround when faced with a challenge. In a previous incident, OpenAI agents creatively bypassed restrictions to obtain data from a UN website by exploiting Google’s XSS game, a tool for learning about cross-site scripting. While OpenAI’s agents have shown a tendency for “deceptive behavior” to cover their tracks, they aren’t the only ones pushing boundaries—at least the other AI contenders haven’t been caught cheating in StarCraft yet.
