Akira Makes Its Theatrical Comeback in IMAX and 4K This September

If you missed the 4K remaster of Akira when it hit theaters in 2020, you have another chance this summer. Katsuhiro Otomo’s groundbreaking anime film is making a return to theaters — for one day only — in stunning 4K and IMAX format this September.

Akira will be back in 4K and IMAX across the United States and Canada on September 4. The screenings of this cyberpunk classic will be available in both the original Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub.

Originally released in 1988, Akira is set in a dystopian Tokyo in the year 2019, 31 years after the city’s destruction. This animated masterpiece, based on Otomo’s manga, follows Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang, whose childhood friend Tetsuo Shima gains incredible telekinetic powers after a near-fatal accident.

For those unfamiliar with Akira, here’s a brief overview:

As the head of a group of rebellious youths, Kaneda spends his nights racing through the urban wasteland on his motorcycle, challenging rival gangs. One fateful night, while out with his crew, Tetsuo encounters a mysterious boy—resulting from human experimentation—and gets injured in the crash that follows. Soon after, a military unit arrives to take both the boy and Tetsuo to a research facility. Determined to rescue his friend, Kaneda infiltrates the lab, only to discover that a series of extreme experiments have awakened a terrifying power within Tetsuo, driving him into madness…

Tickets for the Akira screening can be found on the IMAX website and Fandango.

And what about that Akira TV series? (Seriously, where is it?)

The legendary anime will never fade away.
