Alex Ross Unveils Stunning Artwork Featuring 200 New Marvel Characters in Upcoming Graphic Novel, Marvel Dimensions

Alex Ross’ journey in the comic book world kicked off in the 1990s with his work on the Marvels and Kingdom Come miniseries, where he showcased his stunning interior art alongside his iconic covers. Since then, many comic fans have primarily experienced his hyper-realistic, painterly style through covers of titles like The Immortal Hulk and Captain America, rather than in the interior pages. However, Ross made a return to interior art in 2022 with his graphic novel Fantastic Four: Full Circle, and he’s set to grace the pages again later this year with the upcoming release of Marvel Dimensions.

Recently announced, Marvel Dimensions marks the next chapter in Ross’ collaboration with Abrams Comics Arts, the same publisher behind Full Circle. This new work will explore the origins of various legendary Marvel heroes before diving into a mysterious narrative, with Ross experimenting with different art styles and storytelling techniques. “All these things hopefully seem to unify and combine and come back together, but it’s meant to be a wild ride that is throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at you,” Ross shared in an interview.

In that same discussion, Ross hinted that Marvel Dimensions will introduce “about 200 new characters, or at least 200 new variations of characters.” An exclusive image from Marvel Dimensions reveals a glimpse of some of these new characters.

Upon examining this image, the idea of Ross creating 200 new characters doesn’t seem far-fetched at all. The lower left corner features variations of the X-Men, including Cyclops and a caped Colossus. In the top left, a version of Black Bolt can be seen flying, while nearby are what appear to be distinct takes on DC Comics’ Batman and Green Lantern. Mechanical limbs are prominently displayed with a version of Doc Ock in the lower center, and above, Stilt-Man is seen approaching a portal, outlined by Kirby Krackle, as a Sentinel with a castle for a head steps through.

Check out the splash page and share your thoughts in the comments about the fun variants you spot. More exciting details will be unveiled in Marvel Dimensions when it hits shelves on September 1. Pre-orders are available now.
