Alicia Vikander praises Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, calling it a “smart choice” for the Prime Video series to embrace a 90s vibe.
Alicia Vikander, who portrayed Lara Croft in the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot, has shared her thoughts on the upcoming Tomb Raider TV series from Amazon, expressing her enthusiasm for its nostalgic ’90s aesthetic.
“I loved it when I saw the first picture,” Vikander remarked, referring to the initial glimpse of Sophie Turner in her Lara Croft costume during the Göteborg Film Festival. “And Phoebe [Waller-Bridge, writer and co-showrunner] is so strong. It’s kind of come full circle now. Now you get to go back and celebrate the 90s, which I think is so fun. I think it’s a really smart choice.”
Vikander is the second actress to take on the role of the iconic adventurer, following Angelina Jolie’s portrayal in the early 2000s. The 2018 film also featured Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas. Although a sequel was once in the works, it was ultimately scrapped in 2022 when the studio’s rights to the franchise lapsed.
“I had a lot of fun making my film,” Vikander continued. “Then there were a lot of twists and turns where I don’t really know what happened. But it’s crazy. It’s been almost ten years since I filmed it now. So I hope in the same way that I hoped then, that I could bring in a new young generation. I absolutely believe that they will do the same now. It’s a fantastic character.”
Production is currently in progress for Turner’s Tomb Raider TV series, which also features Paterson Joseph, Celia Imrie, and Sigourney Weaver.
As for the release date of the Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video, it remains unannounced. In the meantime, gamers and fans can look forward to other exciting new TV shows set to debut in 2026 and beyond.
