All the Details on Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the Upcoming Marvel Fighting Game
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is the latest title from Arc System Works, known for their work on Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear, and other popular anime fighters. This game is a tag fighter set in the Marvel superhero universe, but it’s not just a rehash of Marvel vs. Capcom; it introduces its own unique systems, characters, and mechanics. Whether you’re a Marvel enthusiast who doesn’t typically dive into fighting games or a seasoned MvC player looking for your next tag fighter fix, here’s what you need to know.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls features a 4v4 tag system, but don’t worry if that sounds overwhelming. Unlike Marvel vs. Capcom, where you juggle multiple heroes and health bars, you start with just two characters. As the match progresses, you can bring in additional team members, which not only boosts your health bar but also enhances your skill gauge. You can add characters through stage transitions, cornering an opponent, or losing a round, allowing you to access more assist moves and switch between team members throughout the match. The assist moves are determined by the character’s position in your lineup, with specific directional inputs assigned to each. Additionally, you can utilize the team-up gauge for combos and mix-ups, unleashing multiple special attacks in quick succession.
The game features five teams of four, some of which are inspired by well-known superhero groups that fans will recognize, while others seem to be a mix of characters included for variety. Even though they’re organized into teams, you have the freedom to create your own custom team from the entire roster.
– Amazing Guardians
– Fighting Avengers
– Knights of Doom
– Samurai Outriders
– Unbreakable X-Men
Tōkon will include a story mode lasting around 10 hours. Initially thought to consist solely of cutscenes due to a miscommunication, it has been confirmed that there will be actual matches interspersed with the dialogue. On launch day, Marvel will also release a one-shot comic titled Marvel Tōkon First Strike, featuring the Avengers and X-Men teams, along with variant covers for various characters in the game.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be available on both PS5 and PC, but note that the Steam and Epic Games Store versions will require a PlayStation Network login. This means that players in over a hundred countries without PSN access won’t be able to get the game on PC.
There are three editions of Tōkon: the $60 standard edition, which includes just the game; the $85 digital deluxe edition, which comes with the game, all planned DLC characters for the first year, a stage pass, a Howard the Duck lobby avatar, and a Cosmo lobby pet; and the $100 ultimate edition, which includes everything from the deluxe edition plus five costumes and an animated chromatic color unlock.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is set to launch on PC and PS5 on August 6.
