All the Exciting New Features in Overwatch’s Largest Update Yet

Blizzard recently hosted its second annual Overwatch Spotlight presentation, unveiling a host of exciting changes set to reshape the hero shooter this year. The upcoming season is being dubbed a complete overhaul, so much so that Blizzard is rebranding it as “Season One” instead of Season 21 and dropping the “2” from the title. So, what fresh content is on the horizon? Earlier this month, we attended a briefing at Blizzard’s Irvine campus, where we experienced the presentation firsthand, got hands-on with new heroes, and chatted with the development team. Let’s jump in.

The showcase kicks off with a new cinematic featuring Vendetta and Doomfist. Vendetta, the sword-wielding antagonist, has been a focal point in much of Overwatch’s recent media as she aims to claim her place at the helm of the Talon organization. Following the death of her father, Antonio Bartalotti, during the Retribution Archives event in 2018, she lost her promised ties to Talon. Now, she’s at Doomfist’s door, ready to take control by force. This cinematic marks the beginning of Overwatch’s planned annual narrative arcs, which will unfold through periodic lore drops over the next year. Unlike the character-focused comics and shorts of the past, this new storytelling approach will feature a cohesive narrative with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

In-game, players can expect significant changes that align with the evolving story, including map updates, pre-match banter reflecting the current narrative, and in-game events. The first event will have players choosing sides between Overwatch and Talon, reminiscent of a Splatfest in Splatoon. This storyline will wrap up in season six, with a new arc kicking off in 2027.

One of the most immediate changes arriving in season one is the introduction of five new heroes on February 10, coinciding with the season launch. This lineup includes previously teased DPS heroes Anran and Emre, along with Vishkar Tank Domina and two support heroes, Jetpack Cat and Mizuki. But that’s just the beginning; a new hero will debut in each of the next five seasons, and while their identities remain under wraps, we’ve glimpsed their silhouettes. One appears to be a mech pilot akin to D.Va, while another resembles an Omnic.

Blizzard is also shaking things up within the three hero roles by introducing sub-roles, which will provide each hero with unique passive abilities, enhancing diversity in gameplay. Here’s how the breakdown looks:

**TANK**

– **Bruiser:** Reduces critical damage taken. Gains movement speed when at critical health.
*Mauga / Orisa / Roadhog / Zarya*

– **Initiator:** Lightly heals while airborne.
*D.Va / Doomfist / Winston / Wrecking Ball*

– **Stalwart:** Reduces knockbacks and slows.
*Domina / Hazard / Junker Queen / Ramattra / Reinhardt / Sigma*

**DAMAGE**

– **Sharpshooter:** Critical hits reduce movement ability cooldowns.
*Ashe / Cassidy / Hanzo / Sojourn / Widowmaker*

– **Flanker:** Health packs restore more health.
*Anran / Genji / Reaper / Tracer / Vendetta / Venture*

– **Specialist:** Eliminating an enemy briefly boosts reload speed.
*Bastion / Emre / Junkrat / Mei / Soldier: 76 / Symmetra / Torbjorn*

– **Recon:** Detects enemies below half health through walls after dealing damage.
*Echo / Freja / Pharah / Sombra*

**SUPPORT**

– **Tactician:** Gains excess ultimate charge that carries over after using an ultimate ability.
*Ana / Baptiste / Jetpack Cat / Lucio / Zenyatta*

– **Medic:** Healing allies with your weapon also heals you.
*Kiriko / Lifeweaver / Mercy / Moira*

– **Survivor:** Activates passive health regeneration when using a movement ability.
*Brigitte / Illari / Juno / Mizuki / Wuyang*

The new season will also refresh the competitive mode, introducing rewards like a new red Crimson Wolf competitive weapon variant, a Doomfist Diamond+ skin, challenger tier integration, FaceIt tournament invites, and rarity-based competitive titles in season two.

Expect a major UI overhaul as well, completely revamping the hero gallery, social panel, home menu, and notification hub for smoother navigation. A new 3D hero lobby will debut in season one, expanding to a full party experience in season four.

The build-based Stadium mode will also receive a UI update, featuring reworked icons for better readability and a Hero Builder that offers recommendations for character builds during lengthy matches. Vendetta will be added to this mode’s roster.

As with every Overwatch season, new skins are on the way. Mercy will receive her second customizable Mythic Skin, while Mei will get her first at the mid-season patch. Additionally, six characters will receive new skins as part of a Sanrio collaboration.

Future seasons will also introduce more Mythic skins, continuing the trend of customization.

Overwatch is set to reintroduce a feature allowing players to recognize others for their achievements, such as high damage output or time spent on objectives. This will be revamped to display on a new screen featuring everyone’s hero models with the skins they wore during the match.

Finally, Overwatch will receive a Switch 2 update in season two, aiming to enhance the handheld experience, allowing players to enjoy the game on the go without neglecting their daily challenges.

All of this excitement kicks off on February 10, marking the return of Overwatch as it drops the “2” and reverts to its original title. This change is sure to create some confusion for databases that have been tracking both versions separately.
