All the Major Highlights from Nintendo’s Zelda Direct
Nintendo hosted a 30-minute Zelda Direct to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. This is the first of two Directs scheduled for the week, and while the Ocarina of Time remake took center stage, there were several other exciting announcements. If you’re looking to expand your collection with new amiibo, a Lego set, or a Zelda-themed Switch 2, there’s some great news ahead.
Here’s a summary of the key announcements from the Zelda Direct.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Zelda, hinted that the film adaptation will make sense without a subtitle once viewers see it. He teased that the film will pay homage to the series and feature a significant role for the Triforce, a fundamental element of the franchise. The film is set to hit theaters on April 30, 2027, with future updates promised through Nintendo Today.
Miyamoto also mentioned that there will be numerous collaborations and celebrations for the anniversary, including:
Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma showcased the Ocarina of Time remake, specifically highlighting the early Kokiri Forest and announcing its release date of November 5.
Aonuma explained the graphics style and teased some new features, such as a jump button, camera rotation, and the ability to swim and dive without needing special clothing—changes that were impossible on the Nintendo 64.
He took Link into the Great Deku Tree, the first dungeon of Ocarina, to illustrate how classic Zelda games differ from more recent titles like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. We also got a glimpse of Hyrule Field and a new feature called Threads of Time, which provides hints on where to go next without directly showing the path in-game. The presentation then moved to Hyrule Castle Town, showcasing some subtle differences and the day/night cycle.
Players can also hum into the Switch 2 microphone or use the Ocarina of Time peripheral to play ocarina songs.
Zelda Notes, a feature that had limited functionality in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will now work extensively with the Ocarina of Time remake. This includes “gossip quests” where players can track down in-game locations using screenshots from Zelda Notes as a guide.
To wrap up the presentation, Nintendo unveiled a Zelda-themed Switch 2, featuring green Joy-Con 2 with a Triforce pattern and a black dock adorned with a gold Triforce. Additionally, there’s a Zelda-themed Switch 2 Pro Controller and carrying case, all set to release on October 29.
The presentation concluded with a new trailer showcasing Ocarina of Time’s supporting cast, adult Link, various locations, and more.
