Amazon is set to open a massive Super Amazon-mart store in the Chicago area.

Amazon is gearing up for a major expansion into physical retail, aiming to create a supercenter reminiscent of Walmart. Recently, the Orland Park Plan Commission in Orland Park, Illinois, approved Amazon’s plan to develop a sprawling 35-acre site into a massive 229,000-square-foot retail center.

This new supercenter will offer a variety of products, including groceries, general merchandise, and prepared foods. Additionally, it will function as an Amazon fulfillment center, blending the experience of a traditional department store with the efficiency of an Amazon warehouse. Shoppers will also have the convenience of picking up their Amazon orders on-site.

This initiative marks a significant shift for Amazon, which has been scaling back its physical store presence in recent years. In 2022, the company closed all 68 of its brick-and-mortar bookstores, 4-star stores, and Pop Up shops, and it also shut down its Amazon Style clothing stores in 2023. While Amazon has been concentrating on its Whole Foods Market acquisition from 2017, this new venture indicates that the company still has ambitious plans for its physical retail footprint.
