Amazon Producer Anticipates New Bond Casting by Year’s End

The anticipation for the next James Bond is reaching a fever pitch. In a recent chat, a producer at Amazon MGM hinted that we could see the iconic character recast by the end of the year.

When discussing the timeline for Bond, the producer mentioned, “I would say the end of the year is a good bet. We are being really, really methodical. Having worked with Barbara Broccoli at the studio, I mean, Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow. And it’s got to be something really different, that is stirring and exciting and different.” Daniel Craig has been the face of Bond since 2006’s Casino Royale, starring in five films, with his last appearance in 2021’s No Time to Die.

With Craig stepping away from the role, speculation has run rampant about who will don the tux next. Amazon took full creative control of the franchise last year and brought on British casting director Nina Gold, known for her work on Game of Thrones, for the upcoming film. Gold recently won the first-ever Academy Award for Achievement in Casting for her work on last year’s Hamnet. Among the frontrunners for the role is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who sparked rumors in May by signing a deal with Omega, the official watch brand for Bond. Other names like Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, and Harris Dickinson have also been mentioned as potential candidates.

The casting discussions have ignited some cultural debates, with certain commentators expressing unfounded concerns about the possibility of Bond being portrayed by a woman or a Black actor. Idris Elba, who has been a popular choice among fans, shared a realistic perspective in an interview, stating, “I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

On a positive note, Bond has had a successful year in the gaming world with the critically acclaimed 007: First Light, which has been lauded for its fresh take on the character. It will be intriguing to see if Amazon MGM draws any inspiration from IO Interactive’s innovative video game.
