AMD CEO Confirms Next-Gen Xbox Set for 2027 Release

AMD’s CEO Lisa Su recently dropped some intriguing details about two highly anticipated gaming devices: Valve’s Steam Machine and the next-gen Xbox, both set to feature AMD’s powerful chips.

In a statement made ahead of a financial call, Su indicated that Valve is gearing up to start shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year. She also hinted at a potential launch window for Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, which is currently in development. “From a product standpoint, Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year,” Su noted. “And development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom System on Chip is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.”

While this doesn’t confirm a 2027 launch for the next Xbox, Su pointed out that by then, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will be entering their seventh year on the market, making it a prime time for a refresh.

Valve has confirmed that the Steam Machine will launch in 2026, though specifics remain vague. The company mentioned that the Steam hardware lineup will expand in early 2026, but it hasn’t clarified whether this includes all three recently announced devices or just a selection, such as the VR headset and new controller. Su’s comments suggest that Valve could start selling and shipping Steam Machines to customers in the coming months. Meanwhile, Microsoft has been eyeing a release around 2027 or possibly 2028 for its next Xbox. Executives have teased that this new console will be a “very premium, very high-end” device, indicating it won’t come cheap.

Although Su didn’t discuss pricing, it’s evident that upcoming gaming consoles and similar devices are likely to carry hefty price tags. Tariffs have driven up costs for many overseas products, and tech giants are aggressively acquiring PC components like RAM and GPUs to support their AI data centers, which has caused memory prices to soar. Nvidia is even reportedly considering reviving older GPU models as newer components are diverted to high-end data center builds.

Existing consoles, such as the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, may also face price hikes due to memory shortages and rising PC part costs. Even AMD’s more affordable GPUs are expected to see price increases. Recent launches of gaming-related tech have also reflected this trend, with devices like the Xbox and ROG handheld PC priced around $1,000. The Steam Machine could potentially launch at a price point between $800 and $1,000 or even higher.

So, what does this mean for the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox? If you’re eyeing one of these devices, it might be wise to start saving now. Be prepared for potential shortages following their launches, as demand is likely to outstrip supply for some time.
