In a surprising turn, AMD’s CEO Lisa Su has reassured both Steam Machine enthusiasts and Xbox fans. She announced that Valve is set to start shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year, and AMD is prepared to support Microsoft for a console launch in 2027.
I didn’t expect any Steam Machine release dates or next-gen Xbox details to surface during AMD’s latest earnings call. However, Su has alleviated concerns about Valve potentially abandoning its “early 2026” launch plans, suggesting that the compact gaming PC could arrive before summer. Even more exciting, it seems we might see an Xbox console rival as soon as next year, with Su stating that “development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well for a 2027 launch.”
This statement about the next Xbox is quite detailed, hinting at AMD’s role in its development. While Su implies something significant may happen next year, it could simply mean that AMD will be ready to supply the semi-custom APU. She also pointed out that the Series X and PS5 are now in their seventh year, indicating that a generational refresh is due.
The prospect of a 4K console that functions like a PC and taps into Valve’s extensive library of games could make next-gen consoles in 2027 a reality. It seems likely that Microsoft will be the first to unveil a new system, especially since it hasn’t yet released a competitor to the PS5 Pro. However, the tech giant’s gaming strategy has evolved, as they now emphasize “this is an Xbox” across their entire ecosystem.
The emergence of collaborative devices like the ROG Xbox Ally X hints that we might see an Xbox that resembles Valve’s Steam Machine. Whether the successor to the Series S will take on a cuboid shape, potentially running Windows 11 and featuring customizable RAM and SSD options, remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Microsoft will need to navigate the balance between console and PC to effectively challenge the bold new hardware landscape.
As for the potential arrival of a PS6, current rumors suggest a 2028 launch. Sony has a history of releasing systems a bit later, as seen with the PS3 and Xbox 360 timeline. Additionally, there are whispers about a return to the handheld market with what some are playfully dubbing a PS Vita 2, indicating that the next generation of consoles will be anything but ordinary.
