Anbernic’s Upcoming Dual-Screen Handheld May Be the Perfect 3DS Replacement
Anbernic has released a new video showcasing its upcoming dual-screen handheld, which was announced last week. The device is demonstrated running 3DS, Xbox, and PS3 games through emulation. While brands like Ayaneo have been in the dual-screen handheld game for a while, Anbernic has recently entered the arena with its RG DS and RG DS Plus models. These handhelds aim to serve as modern alternatives to the Nintendo DS, but the new RG DDS, short for “Dream Dual Screen,” boasts a faster processor and displays designed to replace the Nintendo 3DS—though Anbernic is not attempting to replicate the glasses-free 3D experience.
Details on performance are still under wraps, and Anbernic has not disclosed the RG DDS’ pricing or how it plans to position itself against competitors like the Ayaneo Pocket DS, which starts at $579. In contrast, both the Anbernic RG DS and DS Plus are priced under $100.
What we do know is that the RG DDS will feature a 4.7-inch top screen with a resolution of 1,200×720 and a 4-inch bottom display at 960×720, both matching the aspect ratios of the 3DS. These screens offer triple the resolution of the original 3DS displays, making it easier to upscale emulated games. The RG DDS will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset, equipped with a 6,000mAh rechargeable battery, and will include built-in vibration feedback along with an extendable stylus tucked inside.
The design of the RG DDS closely resembles that of the 3DS, but it features an additional analog thumbstick on the lower right for 3D games that require two sticks. It also retains the small button located next to the top right corner of the New 3DS’ touchscreen. However, instead of serving as a camera controller, this button will act as a shortcut for accessing yet-to-be-revealed AI features.
