Andy Weir’s latest sci-fi adventure is set to launch in three months.
Andy Weir has made a name for himself by blending humor, hard science fiction, and intense survival narratives in his hit novels like The Martian and Project Hail Mary, both of which have been turned into major films. He’s continuing this trend with his upcoming project, a time travel thriller set to debut on Audible on November 5.
Weir serves as the executive producer for the new Audible Original, Exoplanet, penned by Benjamin Percy, known for works like The Ninth Metal and Red Moon. This immersive audio experience features a full cast, including Anthony Mackie, Ariana DeBose, and John Leguizamo, who portray the crew of a starship caught in a quantum anomaly. Although they all end up on the same planet, they find themselves in different time periods and must collaborate to survive while being pursued by an alien intelligence intent on using human technology to alter the future.
“I’m obsessed with problems, the kind where one person and a lot of math are all that stand between survival and disaster,” Weir remarked. “Benjamin Percy’s writing in Exoplanet takes that and adds a twist that genuinely kept me up at night: what if the people trying to save each other were separated not by distance, but by centuries? You can’t see that story. You have to hear it. The crackle across a five-hundred-year gap, the desperation in a voice that doesn’t know if anyone’s still listening.”
While Weir hasn’t tackled time travel in his previous works, the theme of communication challenges is a familiar one. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney relies on the Pathfinder probe to contact NASA, and in Project Hail Mary, Wyland Grace records messages to send back to Earth along with samples of Taumoeba, waiting years to discover the outcome of his mission.
“Andy Weir’s stories transform rigorous science into big-hearted thrill rides with heart-stopping action and intense human emotion,” said Marshall Lewy, head of Audible content in North America. “That’s why Andy’s books have sold millions and inspired blockbuster films. With Andy as executive producer and Benjamin Percy crafting beautiful scripts specifically for the ear, Exoplanet is built for the audiences who loved Project Hail Mary and The Martian while also giving them something entirely new.”
Exoplanet launches exclusively on Audible on November 5.
