Another Mobile Game in the Final Fantasy VII Series Shuts Down

Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, a gacha game that brought together narratives from the broader Final Fantasy VII universe, will be shutting down later this year. In a post on the Ever Crisis website, game producer Shoichi Ichikawa openly discussed the reasons behind the closure. “It has become difficult to find a balance between production costs and the demand for character weapons and gear,” he stated. Players will have a few more months to enjoy the game before the servers go offline on October 6th.

Launched in 2023 for mobile and PC, Ever Crisis featured a streamlined version of the original Final Fantasy VII’s combat. It was more than just a retelling of Cloud and his companions trying to prevent another one of his love interests from destroying the planet. The game also introduced new stories and characters, some of whom made their way into the FFVII Remake series, expanded on Sephiroth’s backstory, and placed the entire Final Fantasy VII cast in quirky alternate universe scenarios, including a memorable high school setting.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix has launched and then quickly shut down a Final Fantasy VII mobile title. The company previously attempted to tap into the battle royale trend with Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, which launched in 2021 but was discontinued just two years later.

However, the Ever Crisis development team isn’t finished just yet. They plan to roll out a wealth of content in the game’s final days, including re-running past events and delivering a concluding story chapter that Ichikawa promises will provide a fitting farewell to the game.
