Anran’s Redesign in Overwatch Takes a Major Step Forward

Blizzard recently unveiled a sneak peek of Anran’s redesign in Overwatch, addressing the backlash that followed her initial reveal.

The announcement was shared on the OverwatchX account, showcasing significant updates to her character model. Key changes include a broader jawline and cheeks, a raised eyebrow to convey confidence, and the addition of freckles and darker shading. Anran now strikes what Blizzard describes as a “more confident pose” alongside a “more focused” expression.

While her nose, which had drawn criticism for being too small—an observation made by her voice actor—will remain unchanged, the redesign aims to enhance her overall appearance. An image was also shared to illustrate how her new look aligns more closely with Wuyang, her younger brother in the game.

Anran was first hinted at as a playable character in 2025 through a cinematic trailer, but her in-game model diverged significantly from expectations. The original design bore a striking resemblance to Kiriko and other “cute” characters, which conflicted with the strong warrior-in-training image Blizzard intended to portray.

Fans on Reddit quickly filled the platform with suggestions for improvements, and Fareeha Andersen expressed her disappointment in a video, noting that she had communicated her concerns to Blizzard.

“I had to mourn the difference between the design I envisioned for Anran and what we received, as her comic and cinematic set a certain expectation,” Andersen remarked. “There was an unspoken promise to challenge the beauty standards that dominate media today, and that left many feeling understandably let down.”

While Andersen had not commented on the redesign at the time of publication, the feedback on Reddit was overwhelmingly positive.

“Yay, they deJunofied her,” one user noted, referencing previous comparisons between Anran and Juno that highlighted their similar designs.

“Hopefully this changes their perspective on female characters going forward,” another added. “Stop with the generic female template.”

Anran’s revamped look is set to debut in Overwatch’s season 2, which will kick off after the conclusion of the April Fools’ event on April 14.
