Anthem Fan Server Initiative Struggles to Gain Traction Despite Passionate Origins

Reviving a dead game is proving to be a tougher challenge than bringing Frankenstein to life, as fans of BioWare’s discontinued looter shooter, Anthem, are discovering.

Recently, they managed to breathe some life into the game, showcasing a proof-of-concept server test on YouTube. However, it seems their progress has hit a snag. The team behind the server project shared their struggles in a recent interview, urging fans to temper their expectations.

Laurie, the project administrator who helped form a team of developers on The Fort’s Forge Discord, explained that their motivation to revive Anthem stemmed from frustration with EA and BioWare following the announcement of the game’s shutdown. EA stated in a 2025 post that they decided to discontinue the game “after careful consideration,” leading to the official closure of Anthem’s servers on January 12, 2026.

With the Stop Killing Games movement still gaining momentum, fans were reluctant to let go. The official Stop Killing Games Twitter account even remarked that “you as the customer should have the final say as to when you’re done with a game, not the company.”

Laurie acknowledged that the server test video sparked excitement, but cautioned that it’s been challenging to reverse-engineer EA’s proprietary Frostbite engine. “I don’t want to be the person that’s going to have to deal with the aftermath if it turns out that we can’t actually get anywhere,” Laurie said.
