Apple Introduces Encrypted RCS Messaging for iPhone Users

Apple has rolled out encrypted RCS messaging for iOS users, allowing secure conversations with Android users via the Messages app. This feature, introduced in the iOS 26.5 update released on Monday, ensures that your messages remain private, as neither Apple nor Google can access them during transmission.

When you engage in an encrypted chat with an Android user on a compatible carrier, you’ll notice a lock icon and a small “Encrypted” label at the top of the conversation. Apple has stated that encryption will be enabled by default and will gradually activate for both new and existing RCS chats. To take advantage of this feature, Android users must also be using the latest version of Google Messages. Earlier this year, Apple began testing encrypted RCS messaging with Android users.

In addition to the RCS updates, iOS 26.5 brings new wallpapers and introduces ads in Maps. Users may see local ads based on their approximate location, current search terms, or the map view while searching, as indicated by a pop-up when opening Maps after the update. Apple assures that this advertising information is not linked to your Apple account.

Alongside iOS 26.5, Apple also launched iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 on the same day.
