Apple is set to explore the epic world of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe, potentially creating the next big fantasy sensation.

Apple has made a groundbreaking move by securing the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s immensely popular Cosmere universe, setting the stage for a potential on-screen saga that could rival Game of Thrones.

The streaming platform has acquired the rights to Sanderson’s expansive Cosmere series, which includes titles like Elantris, Mistborn, Warbreaker, The Stormlight Archive, White Sand, Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, The Sunlit Man, Isles of the Emberdark, along with various short stories from Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection.

At the heart of the Cosmere is the enigmatic being known as Adonalsium, who was slain by conspirators, resulting in its power fracturing into sixteen distinct Shards. Each of these Shards, taken by the conspirators, influences different worlds, imbuing them with unique qualities such as Ruin, Ambition, and Honor.

Apple is already in the works to adapt the Mistborn series into a show. The first trilogy follows a band of metal-consuming sorcerers as they rise against a tyrannical empire, while the subsequent trilogy, set 300 years later, centers on a character investigating kidnappings and heists. Future series are planned to explore themes set in the ’80s and even in space.

Additionally, there are plans to transform The Stormlight Archive into a television series, with producers already attached. This series spans five books, with more on the horizon, set in a realm where knights and monsters harness magical storms for power.

Brandon Sanderson will maintain creative control over the adaptations, taking on roles as writer, producer, and consultant for each project. This level of oversight is unprecedented, even compared to George R.R. Martin’s involvement with HBO’s adaptations of his works. With Apple’s Cosmere universe in the mix, it’s poised to become a formidable competitor to HBO’s Game of Thrones franchise, which has recently expanded with new spin-offs like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
