Aragorn to be Recast in Upcoming Lord of the Rings Film, Confirms Director
In a recent chat, actor-director Andy Serkis revealed that a new actor will take on the live-action role of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. With Viggo Mortensen, now 67, not returning for this film set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the search for a younger ranger to embody this iconic character is underway.
Serkis confirmed that the team behind The Hunt for Gollum is actively recasting the role and is “on the way to finding someone.” This announcement comes on the heels of speculation sparked by comments from Elijah Wood, who seemed to hint at the new Aragorn’s identity during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
While casting is still in progress for the 2027 film, Wood’s remarks caught attention when he mentioned English actor Leo Woodall (known for The White Lotus and Prime Target) as a potential new Aragorn. However, Wood was careful with his words, making it clear that he was not confirming anything about the cast, including his own return as Frodo.
During the podcast, host Josh Horowitz discussed the challenges of stepping into Aragorn’s shoes, to which Wood responded, acknowledging the difficulty of following Mortensen’s portrayal. His comments led some fans to interpret them as a nod to Woodall’s involvement. The 29-year-old actor has expressed his love for the franchise, recalling that his first cinema experience was watching The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and he has even mentioned role-playing as Aragorn in his childhood.
While none of this definitively confirms Woodall’s casting, it certainly indicates his enthusiasm for the role. Serkis and the team behind The Hunt for Gollum have been tight-lipped about casting details. What we do know is that Serkis will reprise his role as Gollum, and Kate Winslet has been cast in a yet-to-be-revealed part. Sir Ian McKellen, who portrayed Gandalf in the original trilogy, has hinted that both Gandalf and Frodo will appear in the film, but it remains unclear if he and Wood will reprise their roles.
More details are sure to emerge as we approach the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027. Peter Jackson is co-producing this new installment alongside writing and producing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who were also involved in the original LOTR and Hobbit films.
