As the developers of Arc Raiders, Embark Studios is gearing up for a significant launch while focusing on enhancing the community they’ve built. CEO Patrick Söderlund is particularly interested in fostering social interactions among players. He believes that the city of Speranza could serve as a dynamic hub for these interactions.
In a conversation, Söderlund discusses the balance between PvE and PvP that characterizes Arc Raiders, highlighting the unexpectedly friendly player community that has emerged. He expresses that the sandbox experience and community engagement have pleasantly surprised the team, noting, “the events in Arc Raiders are just the output, which is incredible and very rewarding for us to see as developers.”
He adds, “I’m personally moved by the social aspects of this game and the elements that restore faith in humanity. There’s a kindness present in many ways. PvP can be thrilling and frustrating, but those are the elements we need to explore.”
While you might find yourself ambushed by ruthless raiders during your quest for Arc, there’s also the chance of being revived by a benevolent stranger who stumbles upon your fallen form. Arc Raiders has a way of giving and taking.
Söderlund sees Speranza as a potential hotspot for player interactions and engaging features. “I think Speranza is heavily underutilized,” he remarks. “We want to improve it and transform it into something more. Are there opportunities for players to meet there?”
He emphasizes that these ideas are still in the brainstorming phase and not hints at future updates, but he acknowledges that expanding Speranza is something players have expressed interest in and could be exciting.
His comments come after discussions about making Speranza a more walkable hub, similar to those found in Destiny 2 or Monster Hunter, where players can gather, chat with vendors, and engage in various activities.
Design lead Virgil Watkins confirmed that creating this type of hub was one of the initial focuses when developing the game’s front end. The current usability-first approach makes sense for launch.
Söderlund also ponders, “Could this be a place to meet others? Could it serve as a social hub? What more can we do with it?” Beyond its functional and social roles, how will Speranza—currently a collection of menus and backgrounds—contribute to “the lore of Arc Raiders”? Perhaps Embark will provide some clarity on these possibilities in the coming months.
