Embark Studios is taking significant steps to combat cheating in Arc Raiders, and their latest update on Steam is set to make life tougher for those trying to exploit the system. New restrictions on account sharing will help close off some of the loopholes that cheaters have been using.

Steam Family Sharing, which allows up to six family members to access the same game library, now comes with crucial stipulations for Arc Raiders. The key rule states, “If any account in a Steam Family receives a ban while using a shared Arc Raiders license, all accounts in that family will receive a restriction.”

An FAQ clarifies that if one account in the family is banned, it affects all accounts in that group. Cheaters have previously managed to bypass bans by using alternate accounts to exploit the game and absorb penalties, then returning to a clean main account. This new measure makes that strategy much riskier, if not impossible.

Additionally, if any account in the family network receives a temporary ban, they will lose access to the family sharing feature for Arc Raiders permanently. “Any player accessing the game through sharing will need to be removed from the Steam Family and purchase their own copy to continue playing,” according to the new guidelines.

Embark emphasizes that these changes are aimed at ensuring a fair gaming experience in Arc Raiders, which has been compromised in recent months. “These rules are in place to prevent abuse of shared licenses and to ensure all Raiders play by the same standards, whether they own the game or access it through Family Sharing,” the studio explains.

It’s also important to note that bans remain in effect even if the offending account is removed from the family group. There’s little room for error here, so if you’re using this feature, it’s wise to ensure that no one is jeopardizing the entire group’s access for the sake of shortcuts.

After advocating for Arc Raiders to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards, former FPS pro Shroud is stepping back, citing frustration with cheaters and the diminishing fun once everything has been unlocked.
