Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Spin-Off Playtest Faces Challenges
Rumors about a new PvP title in the Assassin’s Creed series, codenamed “Invictus,” have been circulating for years. Recently, a YouTuber known for reliable leaks revealed that a private playtest for this spin-off took place last month. According to their sources, the feedback from this playtest was far from positive, raising concerns that the game’s development could be jeopardized as Ubisoft continues to trim its project roster.
The leaks suggest that Assassin’s Creed Invictus may draw inspiration from Mediatonic’s wildly popular Fall Guys. Given the codename and the involvement of Ubisoft Montreal, known for For Honor, it’s likely that players can expect a series of Olympian-style qualification challenges infused with the franchise’s signature parkour mechanics—though perhaps not quite as whimsical as jelly-bean-shaped characters getting squashed by oversized mallets.
“I was told it was really awful,” shared Assassin’s Creed streamer j0nathan. “It’s supposed to come out by the end of the year, but there’s a good chance it’ll get delayed or even canceled.” To bolster their claim, the streamer included a screenshot from an Ubisoft playtest email.

Ubisoft has seen a trend of troubled projects lately. While Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a much-needed success and the recently announced Black Flag remake looks promising, the sequel Hexe, set during the witch trials, is facing significant issues following the departure of director Clint Hocking. Additionally, a Reconstruction-era Assassin’s Creed sequel was reportedly scrapped due to backlash related to Shadows’ characters and the current American political climate, leaving fans disappointed. The company is currently undergoing a multi-year restructuring that has resulted in several layoffs and studio closures.
In an era where multiplayer games are under intense scrutiny, it’s disheartening to hear that Invictus might be on the chopping block. Multiplayer experiences like For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege have been standout successes for Ubisoft, and many players still fondly remember the cat-and-mouse PvP modes introduced in 2010’s Brotherhood.
