“Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Yasuke and Naoe May Shape Future Protagonist Movement”
This year’s Assassin’s Creed: Shadows marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the iconic Ubisoft series. Approaching its 20th anniversary, Assassin’s Creed continues to excel in delivering fluid, engaging gameplay for players eager to dive into the Animus. The new protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, are set to redefine movement within the Brotherhood.
Simon Lemay-Comtois, the associate game director for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, shared insights on this evolution. He noted, “[Yasuke and Naoe] have very different physicalities in how they move. I think any future assassin that we embody, if they are male, if they’re slightly bigger, all these things can and should affect a little bit of how their physicality translates in the world.”
Set in the Kansai region of Japan during the 1500s, Shadows presents a vibrant mix of castles, towns, strongholds, and other architectural wonders to explore and navigate stealthily. The level of detail is impressive, a hallmark of the franchise, and the unique abilities of the heroes expand the possibilities for stealth gameplay.
Notably, Naoe’s grappling hook allows for quicker and easier vertical movement, introducing a level of agility not previously seen in the series, complemented by Yasuke’s nimble nature.
As Lemay-Comtois points out, the developers have much to consider in how to further enhance gameplay. Different body types can influence movement styles and world interaction, encouraging teamwork to explore and engage with the environment effectively.
While the next installment after Shadows remains a mystery, players can anticipate even more dynamic gameplay from future heroes, adding another layer to the ongoing battle against the Templars.
