Astarion from Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to star in a new prequel novel.
The universe of Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to grow even further. This acclaimed RPG, which launched in 2023 and is rooted in the Dungeons & Dragons realm, made history by winning Game of the Year at all five major award ceremonies. In an exciting partnership, Wizards of the Coast has joined forces with Random House Worlds to delve deeper into the game’s rich lore and memorable characters. As part of this initiative, four new titles are slated for release in 2026, with additional plans for 2027 and beyond to be announced later.
The first of these titles, Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, is penned by the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author T. Kingfisher and is set to hit shelves on September 29. This prequel novel explores the backstory of the beloved High Elf during his time under the vampire lord Cazador Szarr, taking place before the events of the game. To maintain continuity with the game’s lore, senior writer Stephen Rooney provided consultation for the project. An audiobook version narrated by Neil Newbon, who won the Best Performance award for his role as Astarion at The Game Awards in 2023, will also be released by Penguin Random House Audio.
In July, Clarkson Potter released Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay, a blank grid-paper notebook that replicates a significant in-game item. It features foil stamping, an embossed skull on the cover, and illustrated “clasps” to keep its dark contents secure. Following that, in August, Ten Speed Press launched The Official Baldur’s Gate 3 Coloring Book, which includes 40 black-and-white line drawings of characters, settings, and creatures from the game, illustrated by Jaki King.
On November 3, Ten Speed Press will unveil A Feast for a Tenday: The Official Baldur’s Gate Cookbook by Andrew Wheeler. This culinary guide promises to satisfy your appetite with 65 recipes organized by course and camp location. Dishes meant for sharing will be labeled as “Romanceable,” adding a playful nod for fans of the game’s romantic elements.
This collaboration is just the latest indication that the enthusiasm for Baldur’s Gate 3 is only gaining momentum. Earlier this year, HBO announced plans for a series set after the events of the game, simply titled Baldur’s Gate. The show will be led by Craig Mazin, known for his work on Chernobyl and The Last of Us. Whether you enjoy reading, watching, or playing, it looks like Baldur’s Gate fans are in for a treat for the foreseeable future.
