Atelier Launches AI Chatbot Featuring Beloved RPG Hero
Koei Tecmo and Gust’s Atelier series has seen a surge in global popularity recently, largely fueled by the success of Atelier Ryza and the character design of its lead, who was intentionally crafted to be quite appealing to attract a wider audience. Although the developers have since moved on to other narratives, releasing several Atelier titles without this fan-favorite character, Ryza’s enduring charm has made her the centerpiece of Koei Tecmo’s latest venture into generative AI, aimed at creating a parasocial experience through a free-to-start AI chatbot-driven RPG.
With over half of Japanese game developers exploring AI technology, it’s no surprise that collaborations like the one between Koei Tecmo and the domestic AI startup Spiral AI are emerging, as companies look to expand their intellectual properties using innovative tech. This new mobile spin-off presents an AI-driven RPG featuring the beloved character Ryza, who returns for another adventure or simply as a chat buddy.
Launched today on iOS and Android in Japan, RyzaChat: AI takes players back to the familiar setting of Kurken Island from the original Atelier Ryza. Players can engage with an open-ended chatbot to roleplay a virtually limitless array of personalized quests alongside Ryza and other characters from the series. In addition to the RPG mode, a “Free Chat” option allows players to build a friendship with Ryza through open conversations. There’s even an ASMR mode for those who want an artificial version of the character whispering sweet nothings.
The development team promotes the project as an ethical AI adventure, assuring players that no chat logs will be used to train future AI models, and that Ryza’s voice is based solely on clips from the original Japanese voice actor. The game also avoids generative AI art, opting instead for original artists to create new visuals.
However, the subscription model—which includes exclusive costumes like bikinis—and the need for separate token payments to continue chatting beyond the limited free tokens suggest a focus on a specific segment of the fanbase, with potential for exploitation if players become too attached to their companion Ryza.
A global release is on the horizon, and while the Japanese version of the app already supports multiple languages, including English, the date for the international launch has yet to be announced.
