Attack on Titan Creator Reveals He’s Moved On and Can’t Replicate His Iconic Work

Hajime Isayama, the creator behind the Attack on Titan manga, has opened up about his creative hiatus since wrapping up his iconic series in 2021.

During a special screening of the Attack on Titan film, The Last Attack, Isayama shared his thoughts. “It’s been years since the manga and anime concluded, but I’m not actively working on new projects,” he stated. “I’ve been asked to create illustrations and sign autographs occasionally, and I’ve contributed to Yuki Kaji’s Breeze Project, but I no longer draw every day.”

He continued, “That said, I’m not living a life of leisure; my days are quite busy. Even if I had more free time, I doubt I could create something on par with Attack on Titan. Whenever I attempt to write, it feels like I’m just recycling elements from my previous work. My first serialization was a complete outpouring of my creativity, leaving me feeling entirely spent.”

As mentioned, Isayama’s only project since Attack on Titan was a one-shot titled The Theory of Ill-Natured Men and AI, set to release in 2025.

The Attack on Titan anime wrapped up in 2023 after a lengthy final season that included several feature-length specials known as The Final Chapters. These were later compiled into the movie, The Last Attack, which hit theaters in 2024.

While Isayama may have stepped back, the Attack on Titan franchise isn’t finished yet. A producer revealed plans to continue producing films and explore various game collaborations. Additionally, the anime adaptation was honored with the Global Impact Award at the 2025 Anime Awards.
