Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender Set for Theatrical Release in Surprise Announcement

Avatar: The Last Airbender is making its way back to theaters! After a whirlwind of changes, delays, and a significant leak, the animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will hit the big screen alongside its streaming debut on Paramount Plus.

Fans of the series spotted the film listed on the AMC Theatres website, confirming that Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will premiere in theaters on July 24, just a day before it becomes available for streaming.

However, the theatrical release will be quite limited. Reports indicate that Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will only run for one week, from July 24 to 30, and will be shown at just two locations: AMC Burbank 8 in Los Angeles and AMC Empire 25 in New York City. Each theater will host three showings per day, although the AMC website currently lists five showings per day at the Empire 25. Co-creator Bryan Konietzko referred to this release as a “very limited, award-qualifying theatrical run” in an Instagram update.

Tickets for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will be available starting Thursday, July 16 at 9 a.m. EDT / 6 a.m. PDT. The film will also be screened at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24.

This sequel to the beloved Nickelodeon animated series has faced a rocky path to release. Initially set for 2025, the film experienced delays, had its theatrical release canceled (much to fans’ disappointment), and even suffered a leak, leading to the arrest of the individual responsible.

At the conclusion of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang and his friends have put an end to the Fire Nation’s devastating war and ushered in a new era of peace. Yet, as the title suggests, Aang’s journey is far from over. The Air Nomads were nearly wiped out to prevent the Avatar from interfering with the Fire Nation’s ambitions. However, Aang discovers new hope when he learns he wasn’t the only Airbender frozen in an iceberg for a century. According to the film’s official synopsis, fans can expect the following:

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender follows a grown-up Aang, the last Airbender, who uncovers an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the support of his friends, he sets off on a global adventure to secure this power before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens the hard-won peace they fought for.

The voice cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko, Dionne Quan as Toph, and Dee Bradley Baker as Aang’s loyal companions, Appa and Momo. Additional celebrity voices include Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, and Ken Jeong.
