Baldur’s Gate 3 Achieves Remarkable Sales, While Original Sin 2 Sees Its Best Month Since 2017, Says Larian CEO: “I Wish I’d Removed the Squirrel Sooner”
Following the announcement of a new Divinity title, both Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 have experienced significant sales boosts. This surge isn’t too surprising, considering Larian’s big reveal at last year’s Game Awards, but the scale of the increase has pleasantly caught the studio off guard.
Larian’s founder, Swen Vincke, shared his surprise on Twitter, noting, “Sales for both Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 have been incredible since the announcement of Divinity. Divinity: Original Sin 2 really surprised us by having its best month since release in 2017.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 hit over 110,000 concurrent players on Steam on January 18, just shy of its peak of over 127,000 on January 4. It seems many players took advantage of the 25% discount during the winter sale on Valve’s platform to dive into the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Original Sin 2 also saw a peak of over 27,000 concurrent players around January 4, likely boosted by the Enhanced Edition being 75% off. This is impressive for a primarily single-player RPG that’s been around for nearly three years, especially considering it reached over a quarter of its all-time peak of 93,701.
These numbers come on top of the sales from the recent releases of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in December 2025. Larian was clearly prepared for this wave of renewed interest.
If I weren’t already familiar with Larian’s games, the Divinity reveal trailer would definitely pique my interest. With themes of human sacrifice, dark forces, and even an orgy, it raises plenty of questions.
Vincke also took a moment to poke fun at his long-time nemesis, a pesky squirrel from Original Sin 2 that he wishes he could erase. “Wish I’d removed the squirrel in time,” he quipped. Sometimes, if it ain’t broken, you just leave it be.
