Baldur’s Gate 3 Actor Supports Charlie Cox’s Call for Greater Recognition of Motion Capture Performers: “It’s tough to distinguish between the two.”
Devora Wilde has come out in support of her Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 co-star Charlie Cox, emphasizing the need for greater recognition of performance capture artists.
Recently, Cox, known for his role as Daredevil and the voice of Gustave in Expedition 33, urged fans to direct their accolades toward the character’s performance capture artist, Maxence Cazorla. “Any nomination or credit I receive really belongs to him, as the character’s performance is largely his work, and my voice was just a part of that,” Cox stated after receiving a nomination at The Game Awards.
In a conversation with Radio Times Gaming, Wilde, who voiced Clea in the French RPG, echoed this sentiment: “It’s tough to separate the two; you can’t do performance capture without being a trained actor who fully embodies the emotions. I have immense respect for what they do. As Charlie mentioned, they deserve more recognition. It’s an entire world.”
Wilde also highlighted the contributions of stunt performers who handle the motion capture for physical actions that voice actors may not be able to perform, such as sword fights and flips. She humorously referenced a scene where her Baldur’s Gate 3 character, Lae’zel, flips off a ship, quipping, “That wasn’t me. Shock.”
Typically, voice actors and performance capture artists collaborate closely to bring characters to life. For last year’s eerie horror title Cronos: The New Dawn, Wilde shared that by the time she entered the recording booth, her character’s mocap had already been completed, requiring her to “create this perfect synergy” with an actor she had never met.
In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the beloved character Esquie was initially envisioned as a lovable giant akin to Mulan’s companion, but his actor saw a different inspiration: “I pictured Baymax from Big Hero 6.”
