Baldur’s Gate 3 Creator Confirms Divinity as a Turn-Based RPG, Elevating Gameplay Beyond D&D Rules
Larian Studios’ founder and CEO Swen Vincke has confirmed that the next installment in the Divinity series, simply titled Divinity, will be a turn-based RPG, finally putting an end to the online speculation.
The series has explored both action and turn-based RPGs, and with no gameplay revealed in the three-minute trailer at The Game Awards 2025, fans were left guessing about the direction of the new title. There was a mix of excitement among players eager to see Larian’s signature style and those hoping for a shift into a different genre.
Larian is renowned for its turn-based RPGs, most notably the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3. While the studio has experimented with action-RPG elements, it seemed likely they would stick to what they do best. In an interview, Vincke confirmed that Divinity will feature turn-based combat, stating that the game will elevate Larian’s signature style to new heights.
Vincke described the upcoming entry, which marks the series’ first release since 2017, as “us unleashed.” He emphasized that it will be a turn-based RPG that incorporates everything fans have loved in the past, but taken to the next level.
Given Baldur’s Gate 3’s massive success in 2023, this decision seems like a smart move.
